**13th Annual USA Best Book Award Winner (philosophy category)**2016 Beverly Hills Book Awards Finalist2016 Next Generation Indie Book Awards Finalist2016 USA Best Book Awards FinalistMiyamoto Musashi (1584 - 1645) was arguably the greatest swordsman who ever lived, a legendary figure whose methods of thought and strategy have been studied and adopted across a wide spectrum of society, from martial artists to military leaders to captains of industry. The iconic sword saint of Japan was clearly a genius, yet he was also a functional psychopath--ruthless, fearless, hyper-focused, and utterly without conscience. Shortly before he died, Musashi wrote down his final thoughts about life for his favorite student Terao Magonojo to whom Go Rin No Sho, his famous Book of Five Rings, had also been dedicated. He called this treatise Dokkodo, which translates as "The Way of Walking Alone." The book you hold in your hands is the definitive interpretation of Musashi's final work. Readers are oftentimes subject to a single perspective about what some famous author from the past had to say, yet we are more holistic here. This treatise contains Musashi's original 21 precepts of the Dokkodo along with five different interpretations of each passage written from the viewpoints of a monk (Wilder), a warrior (Burrese), a teacher (Smedley), an insurance executive (Christensen), and a businessman (Kane). Each contributor has taken a divergent path from the others, yet shares the commonality of being a lifelong martial practitioner and published author. In this fashion you are not just reading a simple translation of Musashi's writing, you are scrutinizing his final words for deeper meaning. In them are enduring lessons for how to lead a successful and meaningful life.

Books like these are why they say "Don't judge a book by its cover" or perhaps "by its title" would be more accurate. The precepts of Dokkodo, Musashi's actual words, serve as little more than chapter titles in this book.It would have been nice to see a book in this format that actually consulted some experts on, for example, Japanese literature or history, who could actually give some valuable context to Musashi's advice. Instead, a panel of five westerners from varying walks of life, but who don't seem particularly versed in or connected to Musashi's work, and approach each sentence as if they had just cracked open a fortune cookie. Not to knock the contributors here, they do each sound like impressive and accomplished people, but I don't think their advice and opinions (particularly when they deviate from Musashi's own) are what people are looking for when they buy a book called "Musashi's Dokkodo" that purports to be authored by Musashi himself. Often they will begin by disagreeing with the precept itself. Other times they will edit it themselves, as if they somehow had a better idea of what Musashi meant to say than whoever did the translating, or perhaps even Musashi himself. And frequently, they simply meander far off topic. For example, when faced with the precept of "Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling" one of the five contributors advises not to depend on a 'complete' feeling either, while another seems to think that "knowledge is power" is a close enough analog and gives their thoughts on that axiom instead. This could be a fine book on its own, if its title were a bit more accurate and what was inside matched what it said on the tin. Instead, it uses the legendary name of Musashi to cash in. That's a real shame.

Very annoying that Musashi is continually referred to as a psychopath. Was he? Perhaps, since every samurai n Japan was trying to emulate the type of warrior Musashi was, were they a country of psychopaths? I doubt it. And if being totally focused on violently ending an enemy, would the authors conclude that every American combat veteran is also a psychopath? It almost seems as though the authors are trying to distance themselves from the subject of the book, embarrassed to be talking about him.I would not for a moment deny Musashi's violence and the violence of the culture he lived in, or try to glorify that violence, but I am not sure that we can look back across time and judge people according to modern standards.

The book came in better than expected. I love Miyamoto Mushashi and his works. I have several copies of his most famous book "the book of five rings" When I heard he created a list as a guide to follow in life, it was a great find. A warrior monks way to live life reminds me of my early days about guidance for others. The book with its commentaries on that basic list makes it more helpful to give insight and perspective on the list and also how people apply it to their lives. Recommend both the supplier and the book.

Very interesting. Much better than "The Book of Five Rings".

Authors are making interpretations/assumptions from a different era, social values/structure, culture, ethnicity, and lifestyle. To make statements of conclusions with all these factors considered is a display of arrogance.

The Dokkodo itself fits on one page, and is freely available. I should have known that before I ordered this book, but I didn't. So I was disappointed because I don't really care about others interpretations. I just wanted to read the original words. Which are great! And are included.

I love this book and read it twice because it is such a rich book and there is much to be gained by re-reading it. The format is the best feature and I wish it was replicated in other books. The ancient text is interpreted by five modern perspectives, and this helps the reader digest the information and become the sixth interpreter of the work. One does not have to be a martial arts student to benefit from this great book. The lessons explored will help improve one's personal and professional life. I hope this is the first in a series of books in which 5 intelligent, modern voices help reveal the lesson from books that have survived through our history. I'd love to see them do Sun Tzu's the "Art of War" next.
