What makes This Messy Magnificent Life extra special, however, it that it feels like a synthesis of all that Geneen knows. It's so wise. It's so relevant. It's intersectional in that the Geneen addresses food, yes, but this book moves beyond food to the spiritual and to every aspects of one's life. There is not a woman in my life that would not benefit from reading this book---though, I believe men and people of all genders would greatly benefit as well. During this time time of #metoo and addressing the patriarchy and misogyny in the United States, I can't think of a more relevant book that can help all of us to contribute to the change that is clearly on its way.
I was only in chapter one and already my copy of TMML was festooned with sticky notes, inky underlines and bright orange highlights! I've attended Women Food and God retreats and, to me, all of Geneen's teachings are synthesized in this mighty magnificent book. It serves as a reminder to me that the process IS the goal and that my job is to pay attention and remain awake to all the love and joy that is right here, right now, in my own, one and only, messy magnificent life. Excellent book. A lot of her concepts, like owning your part, letting go of control, feeling your feelings, aligns completely with codependency recovery. I'm a CoDA member and these principles complement my work within that 12 step really well. As someone whose used food to cope with my various codependency behaviors, it seems that its coming full circle this book. Highly recommend.
This is now my FAVORITE of Geneen's books......it is accessible, readable and honest - so so honest. Geneen's acceptance of her own humanity makes it easier (less scary) for me to accept my own. I have followed Green for decades, from the days in which her first book, Feeding the Hungry Heart, changed my life, my relationship with food and myself. This newest book is beautiful, insightful, funny, deeply spiritual, practical, wise. It helped me recognize growth that has happened because of the work started decades ago. I don't have Geneen 's skill to write so eloquently about how the quest for thinness was a disguised search for something infinitely more complex. But I am so grateful to have learned i was desperately seeking the wrong thing...and tobhave learned what was really worthy of the Search. Geneen has written with wisdom and as someone who has been faithful to her own Search.
